About

World-Class Work, from Authentic East African Artists

Mashujaa Galleries shares the world-class works of heroic artists in East Africa. Swahili for “heroes”, the Mashujaa were a group of warriors and civic leaders who contributed to the struggle for Kenya’s independence. The Mashujaa encompasses decades of self-sacrifice, from the work of Kenya’s early freedom fighters to Jomo Kenyatta, the nation’s first president. Each year Kenya’s citizens celebrate and commemorate these founders on Mashujaa Day – a national holiday on October 20th. Today, the artists represented by Mashujaa Galleries stand as heroes in opposition to modern day injustices. Their art exemplifies the 21st Century Mashujaa, fighting for peace, progress, and the dignity of all Africans.
